Biyombo was discovered by the former Jordanian and Angolan national team head coach, Mário Palma, at the age of 16 at a youth tournament in Yemen. His play impressed the coach and earned him an opportunity to train in Spain.[1]
Biyombo initially started playing with Illescas, a team associated with Fuenlabrada, in the LEB Plata, before being called up to the senior team after the transfer of center Esteban Batista.[2]
Biyombo made his professional debut in the Spanish ACB League with Fuenlabrada against DKV Joventut on January 9, 2011, and scored 5 points and had 7 rebounds in just 13 minutes of play.[3] In Fuenlabrada's narrow defeat to Real Madrid, he scored 6 points and blocked 3 shots,[4] one of them against former Spanish League MVP and Spanish national team player, Felipe Reyes.[5]
At the 2011 Nike Hoops Summit, Biyombo participated for the World Select Team (against the USA Select Team), and recorded a triple double, with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocks.[6]
Biyombo was drafted 7th overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2011 NBA Draft, but his rights were soon traded to the Charlotte Bobcats.[7]
On December 19, 2011, Biyombo signed the rookie scale contract with the Bobcats.[8]
